Developing Hybrid COTS Solutions for Commercial, Leisure and Military Craft
The COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) hybrid system utilises the latest diesel engine technology paired with a high-power, compact, efficient electric motor and inverter plus a modern lithium-ion battery and system control unit. The engine can be 'clutched out' to allow pure electric drive which means no noise, no pollution, no vibrations and no diesel fuel consumption. During medium to high speed, the diesel engine automatically takes over. During diesel operation, the electric motor works as a generator, recharging the batteries and pushing the engine into a more efficient operation. The electric motor may also assist in order to reduce exhaust emissions. The benefits are no noise, no pollution and no vibrations when operating in sensitive environments.
Venice, a UNESCO World Heritage city, has approximately 20,000 leisure craft and 550 taxi boats serving 32 million visitors every year. As all are currently diesel-powered Venice suffers from high levels of air and noise pollution that affects the water, architecture and health of both residents and tourists. REAP Systems, an independent specialist with experience in advanced propulsion systems, is working with engineers from the University of Southampton to create a drop-in hybrid diesel electric engine that can be installed by any boat builder and retrofitted into all types of boats for military and commercial applications, including Venice water taxis.
Dr Dennis Doerffel - Founder & Chief Technology Officer, REAP Systems
Dennis has a Dipl.-Ing. degree in communications electronics from the University of the German forces and a PhD from the University of Southampton.
Before he founded REAP Systems, he spent 12 years in the German forces, where he lead, organised and trained repair and maintenance teams. Later, he was responsible for the software maintenance of some weapon systems.
He has been fascinated by modern battery technology, their practical applications and challenges since 1998. Dennis is an authentic, enthusiastic and visionary individual who believes "there is always a way".
He has subscribed to the Toyota Management Principles as the way forward into a sustainable world. He leads the way in hybrid electric vehicles, applications for large lithium-ion batteries, systems engineering - always challenging the status quo.
